Treat the Strap as Part of the Fit

A correctly adjusted strap can transfer some load through the heel of the hand so the grip does not need to be clenched. Check whether left and right straps are shaped differently, whether adjustment slips, and whether the webbing remains comfortable when wet. Test the Complete Walking Position

Walk on level ground, a ramp or stairs, and a short uneven section. Plant each pole beside rather than far ahead of the body, and notice whether the shoulders stay low and the hands remain relaxed. Wear the backpack at normal weight because torso angle and load can change the preferred setting. Confirm that the locks remain secure after repeated plants and that both poles can be adjusted without a complicated sequence. Know When a Trekking Pole Is Not the Answer

Trekking poles can add contact points, but they do not remove the need for suitable footwear, route judgment, balance, or turning back.
